The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for the Head, Technical and Research Services for the Brain Institute position.
Specific Job Requirements: Possess a PhD based on empirical research in applied neuroscience, cognitive psychology, experimental behavioral science, or a related discipline. Possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in supervising researchers and research projects and possess three years of experience in training, advising, and mentoring researchers in experiment design, experiment conduct, data analysis, writing, and publishing; minimum of six (6) years of experience in the development of human subject paradigms, protocols, protocol compliance, and handling adverse incidents; five (5) years of experience conducting basic interdisciplinary research in the neurosciences and psychology (e.g., cognitive/experimental psychology, psychophysics, behavioral science).
Experience in executing interdisciplinary projects requiring the integration and collaboration of multiple research groups across neuroscience, psychology, economics, philosophy, and/or other fields. Experience in design of new or remodeled lab space, specification of facilities and scientific equipment. Proven ability to design, develop, test, calibrate, and validate new experimental setups: integration of multiple stimulation and data collection techniques; use of central and distributed control systems; implementation of spatial co-registration systems, sync triggers, and event signals (electronic, light and mechanical); measurement of visual and auditory stimulus properties, millisecond-accurate calibration of stimulus timings. Demonstrated ability to interface with hardware and software manufacturers to maintain, update, and upgrade products and to support the needs of BI users. Experience designing, drafting, and supporting specialized hardware and software needs for BI researchers, including the integration of products from multiple manufactures. Demonstrated ability to implement full experiments: visual and auditory stimulus generation, multi-stream data acquisition, adaptive trial control, and multi-participant interaction using high-level programming languages such as Matlab or Python.
Demonstrated skill in the development of novel data analysis and visualization techniques: non-hypothesis-driven exploration of complex, exotic datasets; design and computation of tailored metrics and statistical constructs appropriate for testing theoretical hypotheses using at least a high-level programming language. Experience in the skilled use of the above techniques, as well as the specification, acquisition, setup, calibration, maintenance, repair, upgrading, and enhancement of specific models. Experience in the use and optimization of the above techniques; and their proper selection for use in experimental designs toward abstract scientific goals. Strong programming skills in Matlab Python as well as C(++)-type languages. Strong skills in data analysis: manipulations, transformation, and integration of multiple and/or large datasets; machine learning, statistical modeling, and statistical inference; signal and image processing techniques; parametric and non-parametric multivariate statistics including Bayesian methods, machine learning, and deep learning big data; construction and automation of graphical output.
General Job Requirements: Knowledge of properties, capabilities, and limitations of neuroscience and behavioral measurement technologies, including specific models of: TMS, TES (tDCS, tACS, etc.), EEG, EMG, EDA/GSR, heart rate monitoring, eye tracking, motion tracking, and human interface devices. Knowledge of properties, capabilities and limitations of sensory stimulation technologies, including specific models of: computer video cards, monitors, high-speed projectors, stereo and dichoptic viewing devices, optical filters, speakers, headphones, tactile stimulators. Knowledge of properties, capabilities and limitations of perceptual and cognitive manipulations, e.g., methods of inducing: visual illusions, masking, subliminal stimulation, afterimages; tactile rabbit illusion, rubber hand illusion, cross-modal facilitation or interaction; priming, framing, prospect theory-related biases. Ability to use Psychophysics Toolbox, PsychoPy, VisionEgg, or equivalent programming packages for fine control of stimuli and data acquisition. Excellent interpersonal skills to work and serve a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels both inside and outside the University. Ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
