Dear colleagues, It is our pleasure to invite you to our School of Computational Sciences Colloquium Talk Thursday, February 23rd 2012, at 12 noon in Von Neumann Hall (545 W. Palm Ave) Coffee, tea, and cookies at 11:30am. Directions and information about upcoming events can be found at http://mathcs.chapman.edu/mathcs/index.php/MathCS_Seminar. Our speaker is Dr. Roman Buniy, Faculty of Physics, School of Computational Sciences, Chapman University Title: New measures for entangled states Abstract: We propose new measures that distinguish and classify entangled states. The measures are algebraic invariants of linear maps associated with the states. Considering qubits as well as higher spin systems, we obtained complete entanglement classifications for cases that were either unsolved or only conjectured in the literature. Please also invite your upper division undergraduate and graduate students to this talk. MESA Middle/Junior High School STEM Day
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Other, Competition
About 350 middle-school students from five area school districts will storm Chapman University Saturday, Feb. 25, followed by a second wave of 300 high-schoolers from four districts two weeks later on March 10. They bring their eggs, foil barges, paper cars and working windmills. They also bring their engineering and science knowledge and creativity to compete in the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Program’s annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Day. Awards and bragging rights go to those triumphant in the fair-like competition’s many events. The most-watched event each year is the EggXpress egg drop. Using only materials specified by the national MESA headquarters as protection, students must keep eggs unbroken and unchipped after their packages plummet from the top of Hashinger Hall to the concrete parking lot below. No aerodynamic devices, like parachutes, allowed; the packages must plunge at the speed of gravity. Judges, with hand wipes close at hand, immediately open the packages and count the number of eggs — and the number of those still unbroken. Student teams’ groans and whoops of triumph are audible three buildings away. Other competitions include building bridges with a specified number of manila folders and tape, other bridges with Popsicle sticks and yet others with balsa wood. Each bridge is then loaded with weights until it breaks. Barges made of drinking straws and foil are weighted with pennies until they sink. Cars powered by mouse traps race on a track for distance; and windmills must drag and lift a load as well as respond to changes in wind direction. Other competitions involve paper cars powered by air currents, models of internal organs and materials, Web-based scavenger hunts, speeches and mathematics contests. The specifications for all the competitions were disseminated in September to the 1,200 MESA students affiliated with the Chapman University MESA Center and the dozens of science and math teachers who serve as MESA Advisors. Students then set to work to design, test and refine their entries until the big day. Students who place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in these events earn the right to participate in the Regional MESA Day events, one for high school and one for middle/junior high school. Chapman’s MESA Program will be hosting the high school regional event on April 14th. The middle/junior high school regional event will be hosted by another MESA Program in the southern region.

"The Frontiers of Fundamental Physics" with David Gross
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Special Event, Lecture
At the frontiers of physics, we search for the principles that might unify all the forces of nature and we strive to understand the origin and history of the universe. Nobel Laureate, Dr. David Gross, will describe some of the the questions that we ask and some of the proposed answers. Dr. Gross will also discuss what it might mean to have a final theory of fundamental physics and whether we are capable of discovering it. Dr. David Gross has been a central figure in the theoretical developments surrounding the emergence of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as the accepted theory of the strong (nuclear) force. His discovery of asymptotic freedom—the primary feature of non-Abelian gauge theories—led to the formulation of QCD. Asymptotic freedom is a phenomenon where the nuclear force weakens at short distances, which explains why experiments at very high energy can be understood as if nuclear particles are made of non-interacting quarks. The flip side of asymptotic freedom is that the force between quarks grows stronger as one tries to separate them. This is the reason why the nucleus of an atom can never be broken into its quark constituents. Gross was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics, with Politzer and Wilczek, for this discovery.

Free Screening of “Magnolia” with Filmmaker-in-Residence JoAnne Sellar
Hosted By: Dodge College of Film and Media Arts
Category: Film Screening
Filmmaker-in-Residence JoAnne Sellar invites you to join her for a free screeningof Magnolia (1999) on Tuesday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Folino Theater. 24 hours in L.A.; it's raining cats and dogs. Two parallel and intercut stories dramatize men about to die: both are estranged from a grown child, both want to make contact, and neither child wants anything to do with dad. Earl Partridge's son is a charismatic misogynist; Jimmy Gator's daughter is a cokehead and waif. A mild and caring nurse intercedes for Earl, reaching the son; a prayerful and upright beat cop meets the daughter, is attracted to her, and leads her toward a new calm. Meanwhile, guilt consumes Earl's young wife, while two whiz kids, one grown and a loser and the other young and pressured, face their situations. The weather, too, is quirky. Sellar will lead a Q&A after the screening. Please remember food and drink are not allowed inside Folino Theater. All are welcome.

ESI/IFREE Lecture - Keith Murnighan, Ph.D.: "On Greed"
Hosted By: Economic Science Institute
Category: Lecture
Abstract: Greed is a central element in human existence. It is also frequently mentioned as a factor in many recent organizational and financial scandals. Thus, it was surprising to discover that empirical research on greed is rare. In contrast, however, a variety of different literatures present a rich conceptual foundation for understanding the dynamics of greed and greedy behavior. We focus on four of these literatures, broadly defined as historical/philosophical, economic, political, and social psychological/game theoretic, to investigate the concept of greed. We identify and explore three of its major characteristics, i.e., its moral, cognitive, and emotional elements. In addition, we present a decision process model to synthesize and analyze the dynamics of intuition, emotions, and reasoning that contribute to or inhibit greed. In essence, our discussion addresses the genesis, the catalysts, and the ramifications of greed. Bio - J. Keith Murnighan is the Harold H. Hines Jr. Distinguished Professor of Risk Management at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from Purdue University. Prior to joining Kellogg in 1996, he taught at the Universities of Illinois and British Columbia. He has also had visiting appointments at the London Business School, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (ESSEC) outside Paris, and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

ESI/IFREE Lecture - Alex Brown, Ph.D. - Experimental Analysis of Envy-Free Auctions
Hosted By: Economic Science Institute
Category: Lecture
Abstract: Economic concerns for equity have motivated game theorists to study envy-free mechanisms. Though not incentive compatible, these mechanisms implement in Nash equilibria efficient allocations at which no agent prefers the consumption of any other agent to their own. In experimental allocation decisions between two players, an envy-free first-price auction achieves similar efficiency and far greater no-envy than ultimatum bargaining. Both unsophisticated subject bidding and coordination failure are responsible for the departure from Nash equilibrium behavior in the envy-free auction, as bidding strategies vary greatly among subjects. Quantal response equilibrium and level- k models can explain most of this subjects bidding behavior. Bio: Alex Brown is an assistant professor at Texas A&M University, having joined there in Fall 2008. He received his B.S. at Ohio State in 2003, and PhD at Caltech in 2008. Alex has a wide variety of research interests including experimental economics, behavioral economics, game theory, behavioral finance and industrial organization. His published papers appear in AEJ: Microeconomimcs, Annals of Finance, Economic Inquiry, Marketing Letters, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics.

The Great Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami: Lessons for California
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Conference
The great March 2011 Tohoku/Sendai earthquake and associated tsunami that devastated large parts of Japan, caused thousands of deaths, crippled large segments of the economy and resulted in a major nuclear disaster, have brought forward once again several issues that are relevant for earthquake-prone regions. Suppose a 7.5 magnitude earthquake were to occur in the next year or two in Southern California: Would we be prepared? How would we know if we are? What should city councils, regional governments and emergency agencies be doing? How would companies be involved and how would a major earthquake affect them? These issues and the potential for scientific forecasting of earthquakes will be discussed at the upcoming half-day conference “The Great Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami of 2011: Lessons for California” on Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 from 4:15pm – 7:30pm at Chapman University.

Science Forum Lecture Series: Karen Setty (S. Calif. Coastal Water Research Project)
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Lecture
March 22 is UN World Water Day at Chapman University. Karen Setty of The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP, Costa Mesa, CA) will give her talk on: The southern California coastal ocean is a cornerstone of the region’s landscape, lifestyle, culture, and economy. Like populated coastal zones all over the world, it also serves as a disposal site for wastes. Stemming from concerns about water quality, the period from 1960 to 1980 saw a flurry of legislative activity focused on improving management of wastes and natural resources, one of which was passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA). Since then, many organizations have devoted a great deal of effort to environmental monitoring, but to date there has not been an integrated assessment of how waste discharges and conditions in southern California coastal ocean waters have changed in the forty years since the Clean Water Act legislation was introduced. The Commission’s Technical Advisory Group for the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project recently undertook a collaborative effort to identify what has and has not changed over time, the current status of marine waters, and the remaining challenges facing environmental managers. This historical perspective will not only help to synthesize fading historical knowledge, but influence future monitoring and management approaches to facilitate examination of critical questions like “Is it safe to swim?”, “Is it safe to eat seafood?” and “Is the ecosystem protected?”. Light refreshments will be served.

Delta Queen
Hosted By: Student Organization
Category: Fund-raiser, Special Event, Philanthropy, Performances
The men of Chapman’s Delta Tau Delta Fraternity invite you to join us Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 6:30pm for an evening at our Delta Queen pageant in Chapman’s Memorial Hall. In 2008, the brothers of Delta Tau Delta started Delta Queen, an annual philanthropic pageant benefiting the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Newport Beach, California dedicated to improving and enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Greek organizations on campus nominate and support one contestant to compete for the title of Miss Delta Queen, a responsibility that upholds the spirit of philanthropy and the vision of Delta Queen. Contestants participate in a talent showcase, personality walk, Greek spirit section, and question-and-answer segments, but strive to achieve their ultimate goal of increasing awareness and support for the Beckstrand Foundation. We take great pride in the work and support we have been able to provide to Beckstrand and hope that you and your guests will join us March 22 for an entertaining and rewarding evening. ESI/IFREE Lecture - Max Krasnow Ph.D.: "Evolution of Direct Reciprocity Under Uncertainty"
Hosted By: Economic Science Institute
Category: Lecture
Abstract: Are humans too generous? The discovery that subjects choose to incur costs to allocate benefits to others in anonymous, one-shot economic games has posed an unsolved challenge to models of economic and evolutionary rationality. Using agent-based simulations, we show that such generosity is the necessary byproduct of selection on decision systems for regulating dyadic reciprocity under conditions of uncertainty. In deciding whether to engage in dyadic reciprocity, these systems must balance (i) the costs of mistaking a one-shot interaction for a repeated interaction (hence, risking a single chance of being exploited) with (ii) the far greater costs of mistaking a repeated interaction for a one-shot interaction (thereby precluding benefits from multiple future cooperative interactions). This asymmetry builds organisms naturally selected to cooperate even when exposed to cues that they are in one-shot interactions. Bio: Max Krasnow is a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California at Santa Barbara’s Center for Evolutionary Psychology. Max’s research focuses on human sociality and explores topics like the evolution of dyadic and n-party cooperation, the design of human cooperative psychology, the design of human social learning, and the design of human gathering psychology. He has studied how simple ecological structures can select for human-like cooperative traits, and how models of ecologically rational solutions to cooperative adaptive problems well describe actual human cooperative behavior.

A Night with Caesar
Hosted By: Wilkinson College
Category: Lecture, Performances, Special Event
The Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences 2011-2012 Series presents, "A Night with...Caesar" on Thursday, April 12th at 7:00 PM in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel. Julius Caesar was perhaps the most fascinating and controversial personality of western antiquity. Pacifier of Gaul, military genius, and political revolutionary, Caesar, with undeniable aspirations of dictatorship, presided over the last years of the Republic in an attempt to address the long-standing civil turmoil that had plagued Rome for half a century. His reforms were largely realized by his successor and heir, Octavian, the future Augustus. We invite you to hear Caesar hold forth on his military and political career, particularly his justification for embarking on a decisive path of one-man rule, a course of action that defied all sacred Roman traditions and prompted his murder by senatorial conspirators. William Cumiford, Ph. D., Associate Professor of History will be portraying Caesar. Don't Miss Out! The event is free and open to the public.

As Naomi Lindstrom wrote in World Literature Today, Valenzuela “has created numerous narratives in which authoritarian rule in society is mirrored by patriarchal domination in relations between men and women.” Her latest last book, Dark Desires, published by Dalkey in 2011, is the author’s autobiographical fantasia on the ten years she spent living in New York City, Valenzuela has called this book her “apocryphal autobiography,” a dialogue between the sometimes harmonious, sometimes contradictory worlds of writing and human interaction. Book shown is Dark Desires and The Others. The focus of the 15th Annual John Fowles Center Literary Forum is devoted to Latin American writers and writing including Carlos Franz, Marcio Souza, Alizia Kozameh, Sergio Chejfec and Luisa Valenzuela. Don’t miss out on meeting these amazing writers and listening to their works!

Through the generosity of our philanthropic community, American Celebration has raised over $22 million for scholarships. Chapman is dedicated to providing all deserving students the funding assistance they need to achieve their dreams. If you have supported American Celebration in the past, we thank you and ask that you renew your commitment again this year. The positive effect of this one evening can change many lives. And what a night it will be! Kicking off the black-tie event is a Broadway-style show featuring talented students from Chapman’s College of Performing Arts. Year after year, thunderous applause brings down the house as the curtain closes on this spectacular all-student production. Following the show, we’ll proceed into a tented oasis for an extraordinary dinner and dancing. On behalf of President James L. Doti and the students of Chapman University, we thank you in advance for your support. Purchase your tickets or table early for American Celebration, as this event will sell out quickly.
