ESI/IFREE Lecture - Brian Roberson: "Dynamic Special Interest Politics and Relational Contracts"
Hosted By: Economic Science Institute
Category: Lecture
Abstract: This paper explores a model of special interest politics that allows for agreements among long-lived interest groups, political parties, and bureaucrats to be supported by informal relational contracts. Special interests and political parties may form agreements involving the exchange of campaign contributions in return for influence over agency actions, but, as agreements are non-binding, there is a temptation for the winning party to renege after each election. We characterize a relevant refinement of the efficient sequential equilibria. We find that political parties and special interests are able to form stable alliances that generate influence over agency decisions—agencies that acquiesce to the demands of political allies are rewarded in the agency funding process and shirking ones are punished. Furthermore, the political parties have incentive to form a system of advisory committees that are positioned to monitor the agencies and can be sold to the allied special interests. Bio: Brian Roberson is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. His research focuses on the strategic allocation of resources in environments in which the outcome of a given conflict is determined by the performance in multiple component conflicts and examines how—in applications from the economic, information, military, and political sciences—behavior depends on the structural linkages between the individual contests.

MESA Middle/Junior High School STEM Day
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Other, Competition
About 350 middle-school students from five area school districts will storm Chapman University Saturday, Feb. 25, followed by a second wave of 300 high-schoolers from four districts two weeks later on March 10. They bring their eggs, foil barges, paper cars and working windmills. They also bring their engineering and science knowledge and creativity to compete in the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Program’s annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Day. Awards and bragging rights go to those triumphant in the fair-like competition’s many events. The most-watched event each year is the EggXpress egg drop. Using only materials specified by the national MESA headquarters as protection, students must keep eggs unbroken and unchipped after their packages plummet from the top of Hashinger Hall to the concrete parking lot below. No aerodynamic devices, like parachutes, allowed; the packages must plunge at the speed of gravity. Judges, with hand wipes close at hand, immediately open the packages and count the number of eggs — and the number of those still unbroken. Student teams’ groans and whoops of triumph are audible three buildings away. Other competitions include building bridges with a specified number of manila folders and tape, other bridges with Popsicle sticks and yet others with balsa wood. Each bridge is then loaded with weights until it breaks. Barges made of drinking straws and foil are weighted with pennies until they sink. Cars powered by mouse traps race on a track for distance; and windmills must drag and lift a load as well as respond to changes in wind direction. Other competitions involve paper cars powered by air currents, models of internal organs and materials, Web-based scavenger hunts, speeches and mathematics contests. The specifications for all the competitions were disseminated in September to the 1,200 MESA students affiliated with the Chapman University MESA Center and the dozens of science and math teachers who serve as MESA Advisors. Students then set to work to design, test and refine their entries until the big day. Students who place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in these events earn the right to participate in the Regional MESA Day events, one for high school and one for middle/junior high school. Chapman’s MESA Program will be hosting the high school regional event on April 14th. The middle/junior high school regional event will be hosted by another MESA Program in the southern region.

Category: Special Event, Lecture, Performances
The Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences 2011-2012 Series presents, "A Night with...Dante" on Wednesday, February 29th at 7:00 PM in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel. Italian poet, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker, Dante Alighieri is probably best known for his most famous work, the Divine Comedy, but he was also a person of profound passions and deep idiosyncrasies. He was exiled from Florence for political reasons, yet he lived a creative and remarkable life wandering the streets of Italy while his impossible love, Beatrice, became the center of his universe. We invite you to join Dante's ineffable experience: the journey of a poet, a man and a lover. The Department of Languages- Instructor of Italian and Latin, William D'Alonzo, will be Dante for the night and will give an unforgetable performance, so don't miss out! The event is free and open to the public.

ESI/IFREE Lecture - Keith Murnighan, Ph.D.: "On Greed"
Hosted By: Economic Science Institute
Category: Lecture
Abstract: Greed is a central element in human existence. It is also frequently mentioned as a factor in many recent organizational and financial scandals. Thus, it was surprising to discover that empirical research on greed is rare. In contrast, however, a variety of different literatures present a rich conceptual foundation for understanding the dynamics of greed and greedy behavior. We focus on four of these literatures, broadly defined as historical/philosophical, economic, political, and social psychological/game theoretic, to investigate the concept of greed. We identify and explore three of its major characteristics, i.e., its moral, cognitive, and emotional elements. In addition, we present a decision process model to synthesize and analyze the dynamics of intuition, emotions, and reasoning that contribute to or inhibit greed. In essence, our discussion addresses the genesis, the catalysts, and the ramifications of greed. Bio - J. Keith Murnighan is the Harold H. Hines Jr. Distinguished Professor of Risk Management at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from Purdue University. Prior to joining Kellogg in 1996, he taught at the Universities of Illinois and British Columbia. He has also had visiting appointments at the London Business School, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (ESSEC) outside Paris, and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

The Great Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami: Lessons for California
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Conference
The great March 2011 Tohoku/Sendai earthquake and associated tsunami that devastated large parts of Japan, caused thousands of deaths, crippled large segments of the economy and resulted in a major nuclear disaster, have brought forward once again several issues that are relevant for earthquake-prone regions. Suppose a 7.5 magnitude earthquake were to occur in the next year or two in Southern California: Would we be prepared? How would we know if we are? What should city councils, regional governments and emergency agencies be doing? How would companies be involved and how would a major earthquake affect them? These issues and the potential for scientific forecasting of earthquakes will be discussed at the upcoming half-day conference “The Great Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami of 2011: Lessons for California” on Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 from 4:15pm – 7:30pm at Chapman University.

Science Forum Lecture Series: Karen Setty (S. Calif. Coastal Water Research Project)
Hosted By: Schmid College of Science
Category: Lecture
March 22 is UN World Water Day at Chapman University. Karen Setty of The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP, Costa Mesa, CA) will give her talk on: The southern California coastal ocean is a cornerstone of the region’s landscape, lifestyle, culture, and economy. Like populated coastal zones all over the world, it also serves as a disposal site for wastes. Stemming from concerns about water quality, the period from 1960 to 1980 saw a flurry of legislative activity focused on improving management of wastes and natural resources, one of which was passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA). Since then, many organizations have devoted a great deal of effort to environmental monitoring, but to date there has not been an integrated assessment of how waste discharges and conditions in southern California coastal ocean waters have changed in the forty years since the Clean Water Act legislation was introduced. The Commission’s Technical Advisory Group for the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project recently undertook a collaborative effort to identify what has and has not changed over time, the current status of marine waters, and the remaining challenges facing environmental managers. This historical perspective will not only help to synthesize fading historical knowledge, but influence future monitoring and management approaches to facilitate examination of critical questions like “Is it safe to swim?”, “Is it safe to eat seafood?” and “Is the ecosystem protected?”. Light refreshments will be served.

ESI/IFREE Lecture - Max Krasnow Ph.D.: "Evolution of Direct Reciprocity Under Uncertainty"
Hosted By: Economic Science Institute
Category: Lecture
Abstract: Are humans too generous? The discovery that subjects choose to incur costs to allocate benefits to others in anonymous, one-shot economic games has posed an unsolved challenge to models of economic and evolutionary rationality. Using agent-based simulations, we show that such generosity is the necessary byproduct of selection on decision systems for regulating dyadic reciprocity under conditions of uncertainty. In deciding whether to engage in dyadic reciprocity, these systems must balance (i) the costs of mistaking a one-shot interaction for a repeated interaction (hence, risking a single chance of being exploited) with (ii) the far greater costs of mistaking a repeated interaction for a one-shot interaction (thereby precluding benefits from multiple future cooperative interactions). This asymmetry builds organisms naturally selected to cooperate even when exposed to cues that they are in one-shot interactions. Bio: Max Krasnow is a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California at Santa Barbara’s Center for Evolutionary Psychology. Max’s research focuses on human sociality and explores topics like the evolution of dyadic and n-party cooperation, the design of human cooperative psychology, the design of human social learning, and the design of human gathering psychology. He has studied how simple ecological structures can select for human-like cooperative traits, and how models of ecologically rational solutions to cooperative adaptive problems well describe actual human cooperative behavior.

A Night with Caesar
Hosted By: Wilkinson College
Category: Lecture, Performances, Special Event
The Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences 2011-2012 Series presents, "A Night with...Caesar" on Thursday, April 12th at 7:00 PM in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel. Julius Caesar was perhaps the most fascinating and controversial personality of western antiquity. Pacifier of Gaul, military genius, and political revolutionary, Caesar, with undeniable aspirations of dictatorship, presided over the last years of the Republic in an attempt to address the long-standing civil turmoil that had plagued Rome for half a century. His reforms were largely realized by his successor and heir, Octavian, the future Augustus. We invite you to hear Caesar hold forth on his military and political career, particularly his justification for embarking on a decisive path of one-man rule, a course of action that defied all sacred Roman traditions and prompted his murder by senatorial conspirators. William Cumiford, Ph. D., Associate Professor of History will be portraying Caesar. Don't Miss Out! The event is free and open to the public.

Chapman University, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of English and John Fowles Center would like to invite you to a special engagement with Luisa Valenzuela (Argentina), April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Henley Reading Room, Leatherby Libraries. Luisa Valenzuela, (born in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a post-‘Boom’ novelist and short story writer. Her writing is characterized by an experimental, avant-garde style which questions hierarchical social structures from a feminist perspective. She is best known for her work written in response to the dictatorship of the 1970’s in Argentina. Best known for her works Como en la Guerra, Cambio de armas, and Cola de lagartija which al combine a powerful critique of dictatorship with an examination of patriarchal forms of social organization and the power structures which inhere in human sexuality and gender relationships. She is among her nation’s most significant writers and is also one of the most widely translated female South American writers. As Naomi Lindstrom wrote in World Literature Today, Valenzuela “has created numerous narratives in which authoritarian rule in society is mirrored by patriarchal domination in relations between men and women.” Her latest last book, Dark Desires, published by Dalkey in 2011, is the author’s autobiographical fantasia on the ten years she spent living in New York City, Valenzuela has called this book her “apocryphal autobiography,” a dialogue between the sometimes harmonious, sometimes contradictory worlds of writing and human interaction. Category: Performances, Special Event
Through the generosity of our philanthropic community, American Celebration has raised over $22 million for scholarships. Chapman is dedicated to providing all deserving students the funding assistance they need to achieve their dreams. If you have supported American Celebration in the past, we thank you and ask that you renew your commitment again this year. The positive effect of this one evening can change many lives. And what a night it will be! Kicking off the black-tie event is a Broadway-style show featuring talented students from Chapman’s College of Performing Arts. Year after year, thunderous applause brings down the house as the curtain closes on this spectacular all-student production. Following the show, we’ll proceed into a tented oasis for an extraordinary dinner and dancing. On behalf of President James L. Doti and the students of Chapman University, we thank you in advance for your support. Purchase your tickets or table early for American Celebration, as this event will sell out quickly.
