The Disability Services Specialist works with students with disabilities to help assure access to physical space, campus programs, and disabilities support information for students, faculty, and staff. The Disability Services Specialist verifies and reviews student requests for disability accommodations and makes recommendations; interprets learning disability diagnostic assessment scores and reports, provides appropriate referrals for supplemental assessments as needed; hires and trains graduate assistants as note-takers, scribes, and readers for students with disabilities; meets with prospective students and parents regarding available services; coordinates with testing services in the Academic Advising Center; and serves as advisor to the student organization focusing on disability advocacy and education. The Disability Services Specialist oversees the budget for disability services and works with a high level of independence under the administrative supervision of the Director of Student Psychological Counseling Services.
