Responsibilities:

Responsible for the planning, execution, evaluation and acquisition of private support, including annual giving, corporate, foundation, and individual major gifts and corporate sponsorships for the School of Law. The Director of Development is responsible for making 12 to 16 face-to-face visits with major gift prospects each month, 4 to 5 solicitations per month, and identifying 2 to 4 new major gift prospects per month. The Director of Development is also responsible for donor stewardship and managing the Law School's Board of Visitors and for supervising an administrative assistant. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice President of University Advancement and has functional, "dotted-line" reporting relationship to the Dean of the Law School.

May be required to drive personal vehicle to off-campus event/meeting locations. May be required to travel overnight. May be required to maintain flexible work schedule, including some evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s degree. Five (5) to seven (7) years of successful fundraising experience, preferably in a university setting. Excellent skills in communicating persuasively, both orally and in writing, about private gift fundraising in general, and in particular, as it applies to Chapman University and the School of Law. Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of annual giving, special events, and major gift fundraising, preferably in higher education. Ability to conceptualize, design and implement a development program. Ability to direct the design of strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major donor prospects. Ability to work effectively with other advancement staff in devising, analyzing, modifying, implementing and evaluating overall University Advancement program. Understanding of academic, research and education functions, operating principles of a private university, as well as the arts and cultural events. Experience working effectively with deans and directors, academic and university leaders and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals. Solid writing skills to prepare clear, concise and effective correspondence, reports and other documents. Demonstrated computer skills in use of word processing, database & electronic mail software, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite applications. Experience in managing revenue and expense budget to meet program objectives.

Desired: Master’s degree. Knowledge of solicitation strategies, constituencies and fundraising theory needed to propel the Law School into high national rankings. Understanding of academic, research, education functions and operating principles of a private university. Experience and skill in directing a comprehensive development program, preferably within a university setting. Knowledge of planned gifts. Knowledge of the Orange County legal community.
