Veteran actress Kim Hae Suk (“Open City,” “Cruel Winter Blues”) takes the spotlight as a fifty-something woman who falls in love with her daughter''s boyfriend, 23 years her junior. Kim Young Min, best known for his roles in Kim Ki Duk''s “Address Unknown” and “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring,” plays the younger man in this May-December romance, which challenges conventional conceptions of love, infidelity, and morality. More than a taboo romance, “Viva Love” is about one woman''s reawakening, and the life-affirming determination to hold on to what matters in the face of obstacles.Paid Event - Tickets are free to Chapman students with valid ID, half price for faculty and staff. Film Screening Film Screening: “Evil Spirit: VIY” (Pusan West Film Festival) SYNOPSIS: Composed of three episodes, this omnibus film tells three stories that seem separate yet are organically linked to each other. The first episode portrays the bizarre experience of a film director who is obsessed with directing a film titled “Evil Spirit:VIY.” The second episode shows a theater group trying to stage the original story of “Evil Spirit:VIY” as truthfully as possible. This episode helps the audience to understand what was going on in the first episode. The last episode is the story of a visually impaired man who is possessed by a witch. In his directorial debut feature, Jin-sung Park imaginatively expresses the various images the word “witch” conjures up in different times and spaces. The film shows, through elaborate composition and unique visual devices, that extreme fear and extreme happiness are two sides of the same coin.Paid Event - Tickets are free to Chapman students with valid ID, half price for faculty and staff. When Kang suspects his latest mistress, Heui-su (Shin, Min-a) of having another boyfriend, he orders Sun-woo to keep a close eye on her and to kill her if she has betrayed him. The inevitable break-up of the husband and his lover, and the conversation between the wife and the returning husband mix reality, TV dramas and gossip. On the other hand, the film is a portrayal of life at Taehak-ro: romance is acted out in the plays and popular music, and poets are everywhere on “theater street.” Nevertheless, the film conveys feelings of solitude and loneliness. Lecture Jeffrey Tollaksen, Ph.D.: “New Ideas About the Nature of Time” Jeffrey Tollaksen, Ph.D. Topic: “New Ideas About the Nature of Time” Our everyday experience of time is in dramatic conflict with the world-view described by modern physics. We experience that time has a certain direction: our offices tend to get more disordered - not the other way round. Yet remarkably, time has no such in-built direction in the most successful scientific theory in history - quantum mechanics, a theory which has lead to much of modern technology. Quantum theory works just as well from past to future as from future to past. A related issue concerns the passage of time, a very fundamental human experience. Yet, in the "block universe" of Einstein''s relativity, time does not pass or flow, it simply is. There are temporal durations, but no flux of time as such. In this talk, I will discuss recent quantum breakthroughs made by Aharonov’s group concerning non-locality and the linkages between future and past. These suggest a novel reconciliation of subjective temporal passage and the static, or block time, of orthodox physics. Dr. Jeffrey Tollaksen (Chair of Chapman’s Department of Physics, Computational Science and Engineering and Associate Professor of Physics) did his Ph.D. with Chapman’s Yakir Aharonov, who made many seminal contributions to physics, including the Aharonov-Bohm effect. This effect, along with the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen/Bohm effect, has lead to many developments, including ultra-powerful computers.
